Animal Genetics and Reproductive Biology Laboratory (AGR Lab.) aims to control reproduction in animals owing to health and economic reasons. In this respect, AGR Lab carries out extensive research studies on reproductive biotechnology (embryo production, in vitro fertilization (IVF), intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI), cryobiology and nuclear transfer). Embryonic and somatic cell biology is another research area of AGR Lab. In addition, AGR Lab has taken a unified leadership role in the establishment of biobanks including sperm, embryo, cell and DNA samples for conservation of Turkish native animal genetic resources. Moreover, AGR Lab has cloned Anatolian Grey cattle for the first time in the world. In the scope of “Cloning of Anatolian Native Bovine Breeds” project, cloned embryos produced in AGR Lab were transferred to recipient mothers by the collaborators at the Faculties of Veterinary Medicine of both Istanbul and Uludağ Universities. After the first male clone (Efe), four female clone calves (Ece, Ecem, Nilüfer and Kiraz) were successfully cloned and they are still surviving well up to date.

AGR is the first laboratory in Turkey applying gene transfer technique into mammalian cells in Turkey. The first transgenic mouse was produced in 1993 – 1994 by the AGR staff. Transgenic animals have been produced to investigate molecular mechanisms of animal and human diseases and/or to develop therapeutic strategies in our lab since then. AGR has the first Laboratory Animals Unit in Turkey which is certified by the Republic of Turkey Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Livestock, General Directorate for Protection and Control to use, to produce and to provide mouse, rat, rabbit, guinea pig and transgenic mouse in Turkey.

Above all, AGR has carried out genetic and biodiversity studies on livestock animals and large mammals of Turkey. The following are the basic research areas and interests of our group:

  • Genetic characterization,

  • Identification of animal genetic resources,

  • Use of genetic data for animal conservation and management,

  • Animal parentage testing,

  • Sex determination of mouse and bovine embryos,

  • Animal genome research and gene expression analysis,

  • Utilization of genomic tools to improve livestock breeds for economically and agriculturally important traits, Reproductive biotechnology,

  • Production of transgenic mice,

  • Experimental animal production

Animal Genetics and Reproductive Biology Laboratory is in close collaboration with many universities, institutes and researchers both in Turkey and abroad. Laboratory members have organized practical applied courses focusing particularly on reproductive biotechnology to share their knowledge with researchers with similar interests and to lead scientific studies in this area since 1998. Over the last few years, practical applied courses on molecular genetics techniques and application of bioinformatics tools in animal genetics have also been organized.
