Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology Institute (GMBE) originates from the Biology Department which was founded in 1983 as a part of TÜBİTAK Gebze Research Center’s Fundamental Sciences Research Institute in order to conduct basic and applied original researches in molecular biology. The Biology Department was then transformed to Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology Institute and affiliated to Marmara Research Center in 1992.
The institute conducts researches and develops technologies in the field of Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology with high added value by taking into consideration the developments in the world and the needs of the public and industrial sectors in Turkey. Its projects and industrial services cover the following areas:
• Animal Biotechnology
• Medical Biotechnology
• Enzyme and Fermentation Technologies
• Plant Biotechnology
The institute conducts its activities in these fields in 9 laboratories with a competent research personnel.
In addition to these modern laboratories, the institute has a modern infrastructure at Bio-Safety Level-3 (BSL3) which protects the personnel and environment and which allows systematic, controlled and secure researches on pathogens (bacteria, viruses, toxins, etc.) forming threat for human and animal health, and a Laboratory Animal Unit certified by the Protection and Control Directorate of the Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Livestock for the reproduction, usage and supply of rats, rabbits and transgenic mice.
